How to Be a Good Ancestor
Brief
For this university motion graphics project, our task was to create a visual representation of Roman Krznaric’s talk How to Be a Good Ancestor. Rather than interpreting the speech literally, we explored the concept of legacy, sustainability, and how individual actions can impact future generations.
The project required collaboration in a small team, combining multiple art styles into a cohesive animation while translating abstract, complex ideas into an engaging visual narrative.
As a group of three, we began by storyboarding the entire animation together to ensure a consistent narrative flow. Once the structure was finalised, each member was assigned ‘assets’ to illustrate based on colour codes. Since everyone worked in different styles — from hand-drawn to vector — the visuals initially felt disjointed.
Storyboard context: Items within the pink outlines are the assets I drew
To bring everything together, I combined and animated all the assets, unifying them through a scrapbook-inspired aesthetic with textured, cut-paper visuals. This approach tied the mixed styles into one cohesive look that reflected the project’s theme of connection and collective impact.
